Hey Music, Thank you for the memories….

Well, at the ripe old age of 46 (turning 47 in January 2016), I am not becoming any less nostalgic.  For me, music is definitely a trigger for memories and emotions.  I get a kick out of looking at photos but hearing a song can elicit a video of my own in my mind any given day.  Even if the song does not necessarily apply to the memory literally (a sad song about good byes does not always remind me of saying good bye to someone) the song itself can trigger memories (some latent) about where I was or who I was with, etc.  I would go so far as to say that I can close my eyes and experience yet again the scents and sounds I associated with the memory!

As we dive into November and prepare for Thanksgiving, I find myself thinking about how grateful I am to have been exposed to a variety of music and of course (age showing here…) lived the 80’s music within it’s full glory!

Aside from the 80’s music, I am able to recall loving from a young age, the sounds of what is now Classic Rock while appreciating Elvis (I remember clipping newspaper articles when he died) and The Beatles while being exposed to classical music by my dad.

There are those who still love vinyl and will not listen to anything but vinyl.  I do not have a preference nor can I afford to.

Having grown up in the city in a fairly diverse neighborhood, I was fortunate to have been exposed to music from other cultures.  To this day, I still appreciate all sounds and styles of music.

Another memory that remains close to my heart is listening to music boxes!  My grandmother collected them.

Oh, how I loved Edelweiss on the little music box that she had that played that!  Does anyone remember the Fisher Price Music Record Player?  I recall hearing a “music box” version of Edelweiss on the player that I had.

I love that my kids (ages twenty-four and fourteen) have an appreciation for a wide variety of music as well.  Although, I think Kyle (24) has more appreciation for 80’s music than Alex (14).  Not to worry, I can keep him captive in the car and brainwash him with my 80’s CD Collection!
